Instagram white border tool — equal borders on every photo
Add a white border (or any colour) around your Instagram photos so portrait and landscape shots get exactly the same margin. Postfolio sets the mat on the canvas, not on the photo, exports at 1080 × 1440 or 1080 × 1350 and does it for the whole carousel at once. Free in the browser, on iPhone and Android — no watermark.
- Equal on all sidesMargin measured from the slide edge, in pixels.
- Whole carouselOne setting for every slide — portrait and landscape alike.
- Any colourWhite, black, off-white or a tone picked from the photo.
- FreeNo watermark, no account, no upload.
How to add a white border to Instagram photos
- Add your photos. Open the web app or the iPhone/Android app and add one photo per slide. Mix portrait and landscape freely.
- Set the mat. Tap a photo → Margin and pick a width — 40 pt is a classic gallery border. For a thin line around the photo itself, add Border and tap All photos.
- Pick the colour and export. Choose white or any colour with the swatch or the eyedropper, then Export ↑. Every slide comes out at Instagram's exact size with identical borders.
Border sizes that look right
| Margin on a 1080 px slide | Look |
|---|---|
| 10–20 px | Hairline, subtle frame |
| 30–50 px | Gallery mat — the classic portfolio feed |
| 60–100 px | Print on a wall, lots of air — photo gets smaller |
Why many "add border" apps make uneven borders, and the geometry behind it: How do I add equal white borders to Instagram photos?
Questions, answered straight.
Is the white border tool free?
Yes. Border and Margin are free photo tools in the Postfolio web app and the iPhone and Android apps — no watermark, no account.
How do I get equal borders on portrait and landscape photos?
Set the margin on the canvas, not on the photo. Postfolio measures the margin from the slide edge in pt (1 pt = 1 px of the 1080-wide export), so a 40 pt mat is 40 px on every side of every slide, whatever the photo's shape.
How wide should a white border be?
On a 1080-wide slide, 30–50 px looks like a gallery mat. Under 20 px it reads as a hairline; over 60 px the photo starts to look small on a phone.
Can I use a colour other than white?
Yes — any colour, or pick one from the photo with the eyedropper. Black, off-white and a muted tone from the photo are the classics.
Can I add the same border to every slide?
Yes. Set the outer margin once under Layout → Grid and it applies to the whole carousel; for a line around each photo, use Border → All photos.
Does the border break a seamless panorama?
Only if it is added per slide. In Postfolio the border is applied to the panorama as a whole before the split, so the seam stays invisible.
